Picture of Historic Treasury Building The U.S. Department of the Treasury has a distinguished history dating back to the founding of our nation. Though formally established as an executive department by the First Session of Congress in 1789, many functions were carried out even before the signing of the Declaration of Independence thirteen years earlier.
